For decades, women have been <\/span>underrepresented in investing\u00b9<\/span><\/a> \u2013 both professionally and as consumers. But, in the last several years, the tide has started to turn, and more women <\/span>are investing\u00b2<\/span><\/a> than ever before. Women are becoming more financially independent and are recognizing the importance of investing to secure their future.<\/span><\/p>

In 2020, women controlled <\/span>about a third of the world\u2019s \u00b3<\/span><\/a>. But in the coming years, women stand to inherit an unprecedented amount of wealth as part of the <\/span>greatest wealth transfer in history\u2074<\/span><\/a>. In the U.S., the majority of investable assets are controlled by Baby Boomers in joint households. Because women tend to live longer than men, they will gain control of the family purse strings before their wealth gets passed on to the next generation. Data <\/span>from McKinsey\u2075<\/span><\/a> shows that, by 2030, women could control the lion\u2019s share of Boomers\u2019 $30 trillion in financial assets.<\/span><\/p>

The good news is, <\/span>women are excellent investors\u2076<\/span><\/a>. But they still face challenges \u2013 whether they\u2019re looking to live comfortably in retirement, invest for impact, help their children and grandchildren begin their own investment journeys, or all of the above, they\u2019ll need to overcome common obstacles to meet their goals \u2013 and meaningfully narrow the investment gender gap. Fortunately, with the help of a gender-lens-informed portfolio manager, all of this is possible (and more).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gender-Based Perceptions and Misconceptions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Women investors <\/span>often get a bad rap\u2077<\/span><\/a> \u2013 along with the assumption that they\u2019re not as financially savvy as men. In fact, eight in 10 women say they\u2019ve encountered these stereotypes. But in truth, these assumptions don\u2019t hold water. Multiple studies have found that women investors outperform men, including recent research from Fidelity that concluded <\/span>women\u2019s portfolios surpassed men\u2019s\u2078<\/span><\/a> by nearly half a percentage point over a decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Even so, research shows <\/span>women lag behind men\u2079<\/span><\/a> in investment knowledge and confidence. And there are many reasons for these discrepancies, says Mary Lou Miles, partner and head of wealth management at Genus. \u201cEverything from culture, to marketing, to the way that this financial education is ignored for the most part in the school system.\u201d There is also the glaring <\/span>income gap\u00b9\u2070<\/span><\/a> that women face as they are often paid less than men and may have less disposable income to invest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Miles says these influences breed imposter syndrome in many women \u2013 from those who\u2019ve come into money through inheritance to those who\u2019ve had successful careers. \u201cThey sometimes feel detached from their investments, particularly if they\u2019ve faced bias from male-dominated institutions\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>

Finances can be intimidating. Acronyms can create exclusivity, there\u2019s a lot at stake and someone who\u2019s new to investing may not be aware of all their options. To overcome that challenge, education can go a long way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There are now more educational resources available to women, allowing them to learn about the investment process and build their knowledge and confidence. Genus offers regular webinars that cover everything from estate and <\/span>legacy planning\u00b9\u00b9<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>values alignment\u00b9\u00b2<\/span><\/a> in an investment portfolio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But often the most valuable information comes through meeting with a portfolio manager. \u201cWe focus on looking at long-term planning and asking questions they haven\u2019t thought about,\u201d says Miles. That includes exploring the client\u2019s values, interests and goals for their legacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cClarity of communication is key, and making sure they feel comfortable,\u201d Miles adds. \u201cAnd also that they\u2019re part of the decision-making process \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s more about them than us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Lack of Diversity in Wealth Management<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For many women, feeling heard, understood and taken seriously in the financial services sector can be rare. Part of that is due to a lack of female representation among wealth managers.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThe investment industry is definitely male-dominated,\u201d says Miles. One 2020 report found that <\/span>just 18% of total financial advisors<\/span><\/a> in the U.S\u00b9\u00b3.<\/span> are women. That lack of diversity can make for an intimidating environment for women, particularly if they\u2019re new to investing. \u201cThat can be a barrier to entry for some prospective clients,\u201d Miles says.<\/span><\/p>

Seeking out a portfolio manager who is empathetic to their needs can help women to overcome this barrier. But that\u2019s not always easy to find.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While historically, women investors may have felt at odds with wealth management, it\u2019s clear that their participation represents a new chapter \u2013\u00a0and new potential \u2013 for impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Studies have found about 52% of women <\/span>prefer to invest\u00b9\u2074<\/span><\/a> in companies with positive social or environmental impact, compared to 44% of men. As more women look to invest, there will be more questions about which companies are making a difference in the world, and an expectation that wealth management companies provide answers.<\/span><\/p>
