Meet our Team

Wayne Wachell, MBA CFA
CEO & Chief Investment Officer (Founding Partner)

Wayne co-founded Genus Capital in 1989 and is the architect of the firm’s investment process. He directs our research and investment operations and the development of new products.

Wayne grew up in northern Manitoba, attended the University of Alberta, and first entered the investment field as a portfolio analyst with Alberta Treasury in 1980.

He is a past president of CFA Vancouver and has appeared as a market commentator on CBC Newsworld. Wayne serves on the Board of the Bill Reid Foundation and mentors students in the University of British Columbia Portfolio Management Foundation Program.

Leslie G. Cliff, BSc CFA OC
Portfolio Manager (Founding Partner)

Born and raised in Vancouver, Leslie spent nine years on Canada’s National Swim Team, which included an Olympic silver medal in 1972. She is an Honourary CPA and an Order of Canada recipient. Leslie was recently recognized by BC Business as one of the province’s “Most Influential Women in Business.”

Leslie started her career in 1981 as a stockbroker prior to evolving into portfolio management in 1986. In 1989, Leslie co-founded the asset management firm, Genus Capital, and is currently Chair of its Board.

Leslie has an Associated Arts degree from Langara College, a finance degree from Arizona State University, which she attended on a Swimming Scholarship and a Chartered Financial Analyst degree from the University of Virginia.

Leslie has served on many professional and community boards over the years. Currently, she is on the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Investment Committee.

Leslie is married to Mark Tindle and has two children, Scott and Lisa, and has two grandchildren. Her favourite activity is to swim with her grandchildren.

Stephen Au, BComm MBA CPA CGA

Chief Operating Officer (Partner)

As Chief Operating Officer, Steve is responsible for client record-keeping and maintaining the accounts for the Genus Capital pooled fund components.

He also serves as the firm’s Chief Compliance Officer, Privacy Officer, and Internal Auditor. Steve joined Genus in 2001 and has been a partner since 2007. He was born in Vancouver, and graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2001 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He obtained his Certified General Accountant designation in 2007, and completed an executive MBA at Simon Fraser University in 2013.

Mary Lou Miles

Director of Wealth Management (Partner)

Mary Lou Miles is the Director of Wealth Management at Genus Capital. Mary Lou specializes in serving high net worth individuals and families by creating customized investment portfolios. Mary Lou holds a BA in Economics, the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and the Trust and Estate Practitioners designation. She has been a portfolio manager for over twenty years, joining Genus in 2005 after the purchase of a small Vancouver investment counsel firm. Prior to that, Mary Lou held senior positions with a major bank.

Margaret Lanthier

Portfolio Manager (Partner)

Margaret is a senior partner and portfolio manager dedicated to serving her wealth management clients. She has extensive experience serving the non-profit community and has spoken at numerous industry seminars on the ongoing challenges facing this sector. As an advocate, Margaret has been a proud supporter of community and charitable organizations. She is past Chair of the Board of Music in the Morning, former Vice Chair of the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC and past member of the Planned Giving Committee of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation.

Margaret is a member of the CFA Institute of Vancouver and a Life Member of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver.

Martin Wegren, CIM, CFP
Portfolio Manager (Partner)

As a Portfolio Manager, Martin manages the investment wealth for clients and their families, corporations, institutions, and foundations.

Known for his client-centered tailored approach, Martin has provided professional investment management for individuals and their families for over two decades to help grow and protect their wealth. Prior to joining Genus, Martin was an Investment Counsellor at HSBC Private Wealth Services, and specialized in estate planning and investment management during his time at RBC Wealth Management and CIBC Wealth Management.

Martin is a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). In his spare time, Martin is proud to support community and charitable organizations, including the BC Children’s Hospital.

Sue-May Talbot, CIM
Portfolio Manager (Partner)

Sue-May has been with Genus Capital since the day the firm was founded in 1989. In addition to being a registered Portfolio Manager, Sue is also Director of Client Service.

She holds the Chartered Investment Manager designation and has a Diploma in Business Management from Simon Fraser University. In her role as Portfolio Manager, Sue works with individuals and families to create and manage their custom portfolios. In her role as Director of Client Service, she is responsible for developing and implementing the direction of client servicing and administrative support for our entire team of portfolio managers. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Nanaimo and Vancouver, Sue worked in the sales and marketing department of a major private investment counselling firm prior to joining Genus.

Lisa Zhang, M.Sc. MA CFA
Director of Equity Investments (Partner)

Lisa Zhang is responsible for managing our day-to-day equity investment strategies and overseeing our rebalancing, portfolio construction and trading process.

She also leads the team involved with data analysis, strategy testing and quantitative equity research. Lisa joined Genus Capital in July 2007 after completing a Master of Science degree in Finance from the University of British Columbia. Lisa also has a Master of Arts degree in Economics from York University. She received her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2011.

Stephanie Tsui, M.Sc.
Portfolio Manager, Director of Foundations and Non-Profits


Stephanie joined the Portfolio Management team at Genus in 2016 as Portfolio Manager and Director of Foundations and Non-Profits. Stephanie recently moved back to Vancouver after having spent the last 12 years in New York and Hong Kong, where she gained substantial professional experience in the field of investment management, capital markets, and wealth management.

She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Science in Financial Engineering degree in 2004, with Distinguished Achievement. Stephanie then started her career in New York with Goldman Sachs Asset Management. In 2006, she relocated to Hong Kong and her most recent position in Hong Kong was with Credit Suisse private bank, where she was the Director of Ultra-High Net Worth Investment Solutions Asia Pacific. With Genus, she is looking to leverage her experience and further her passion in providing wealth management expertise, solutions, and service while building long term relationships with her clients and the local communities. In her free time, she loves music, dancing, and travelling.

Ian Lusher, CFP CIM
Portfolio Manager (Partner)

Ian specializes in serving individuals, families, holding companies, and foundations with substantial assets by creating customized investment portfolios. Ian takes a client centric approach to investing. He has been in the investment and banking business since 1996.

He was born in Vancouver and raised in Pitt Meadows. Ian graduated from both Simon Fraser University and the University of the Fraser Valley. Ian holds a BA in Psychology/Communications, a second BA in History, the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation, and the Chartered Financial Planner (CFP) designation. He joined Genus from HSBC Private Wealth Services (Canada) Inc. For over a decade, Ian has volunteered in the community coaching various levels of hockey, baseball, and basketball. In his spare time, Ian is an avid writer and has been featured in the Daily Hive Vancouver.

Grant Conroy, CIM, FEA
Portfolio Manager

Originally from the UK, Grant spent the first 17 years of his career in equities trading with Goldman Sachs, London. Here he gained an invaluable insight and experience into global financial markets. Grant moved to Vancouver late 2013 with his wife, and has two small children.

He joined the Genus team in July 2016 and successfully obtained the Family Enterprise Advisor (FEA) designation in 2018. He also has the CIM designation and a BA in Business from Kingston University, England. Outside of Genus, Grant serves as the Treasurer to the Writers Exchange Children’s charity on East Hastings and as Treasurer to B Local Vancouver.

Thomas Irwin, CFP CIM
Associate Portfolio Manager

As a Certified Financial Planner, Thomas creates customized wealth management strategies and specializes in retirement income planning for his clients.

Thomas joined the Genus team in 2018, with 18 years of experience in wealth management, including 12 years at RBC as a financial planner. Thomas is also a Chartered Investment Manager.

In his spare time, Thomas plays hockey, enjoys golf and photography, and is a Board Member of KidSport North Shore, a charity that helps kids overcome financial barriers preventing them from playing organized sport. Thomas is also a member of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.

Jill Bester, CFP CIM
Associate Portfolio Manager

As a Certified Financial Planner, Jill develops customized wealth management strategies and specializes in retirement income planning for her clients.

Jill has 26 years of banking and wealth management experience, including time at HSBC Bank Canada and RBC, and is a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM). In 2018, Jill moved to Genus to support clients with their retirement planning needs.

In her spare time, Jill volunteers for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Kidney Foundation of Canada and Junior Achievement, and has coached youth soccer for over 15 years. She also enjoys golfing, fishing and skiing, and spending time with her family.
